BALLAD TO ALETHA R written by Sheldon Manoo (1999)

This song was written from a true encounter with a woman who contracted HIV from her husband.

Beautiful smile
Beautiful black woman
Grace in her eyes
Beautiful black woman
I thought she wanted to know me
Better than anyone knew me
Cause she was smiling friendly
You would think her life's happy

Beautiful smile
Beautiful black woman
Light in her eyes
Beautiful black woman
And as she approached me
I was feeling anxious
Then when she told me
Looks can be real dangerous

She spoke kind and she spoke soft
Told me about the trouble she was in
Asked if I can help her out
So I did, I gave her a ten
She said she got it from her husband
And that she has three children
And she can't get a job cause she's HIV positive
And so too does the last of her kids'

And I wish I had an answer or a cure
I wished I could have done a whole lot more, for that
Beautiful smile
Beautiful black woman
There's just so much I don't understand!
